Year 2020 at the beginning, had schedules for a whole lot of sporting events, but the Coronavirus Pandemic that struck the world had some of these events postponed, some rescheduled to contain the spread of the virus, as many countries had lockdown declared by their government.
As the year went by, different countries eased the lockdown and some sporting activities were staged to the delight of sports betting fans.
2020 had many sporting activities, and here’ our top 5 sporting moments of 2020.
- Bayern Munich winning the UEFA Champions League
The German giants last won the title in 2013, before finally winning it in August. They had always come close, getting to the semi finals 3 times, and the quarter final once before this year.
They won it in grand style as they didn’t lose any game till they got to the final and beat PSG, the 8-2 win against Barcelona was also a huge point in their quest to winning it.
- Lebron James winning another NBA Championship
A top one it is. For the first time since since Kobe Bryant’s last title and his fifth 10 years ago, the Lakers became NBA champions.
Lebron James had 28 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists as Los Angeles Lakers beat Miami heat 106 – 93 to win the NBA.
- Leeds United getting Promoted to the English Premier League
After 16 years of absence from the Premier League, Argentinian Coach, Marcelo Bielsa led them back to the top division.
Prior to the promotion, it had been a long and painful journey to the Premier league for the fans of Leeds United who had seen their team reach the Semi-final of the UEFA Champions League in 2001.
They fell into a dreadful financial position when they got relegated to the championship in 2004, but 16 years after, they returned back, and it doesn’t look like they’re going to return anytime soon.
- Lewis Hamilton winning his 7th Championship title
The English Man wrote his name alongside Michael Schumacher in Formula one’s record books as the most successful driver of all time having won his 7th title.
This moment is so great, because after he won the title in Turkey, he put out a post on his Instagram to continue to lend his voice to the cause of racial justice.
He said;
“This year has been so unpredictable. With the pandemic and obviously the season being pushed back by several months, I had the most downtime I’ve ever had in my life. It gave me the chance to really think about my ultimate purpose. Seven World Championships means the world to me, I can’t even describe how much, but there’s still another race we’ve yet to win.
This year I’ve been driven not just by my desire to win on the track, but a desire to help push our sport, and our world to become more diverse and inclusive. I promise you I am not going to stop fighting for change. We have a long way to go but I will continue to push for equality within our sport, and within the greater world we live in.
“Equaling Michael Schumacher’s record puts a spotlight on me that I know won’t be here forever. So, while you’re here, paying attention, I want to ask everyone to do their part in helping to create a more equal world. Let’s be more accepting and kinder to each other. Let’s make it so that opportunity is not something that is dependent on background or skin colour.
1.Players taking the knee for Racial Justice
Players taking the knee to preach the message against racial abuse should be the greatest sporting events for 2020.
