It’s been a particularly great season for several Nigerian players across Europe. Several goal records have been broken by some strikers just as we have witnessed a considerable number of Nigerians help their respective clubs clinch silverware.
In this piece, NetBet Nigeria sheds the spotlight on the Nigerians who have had the best season performances, and most especially clinched silverware in Europe.
Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi
The duo played a vital role for Leicester City as the Foxes won the English FA Cup trophy for the first time in their club’s history. In fact, striker Iheanacho, who enjoyed a massive career resurgence this season, notably top scored in the competition with four goals in six games. Iheanacho also impressively contributed 12 league goals to the Foxes’ course in the second-half of the season, and truly his big form almost delivered a top-four finish for the Foxes but for the unfortunate capitulation on the last matchday.
On the other hand, Ndidi, as always held down his defensive midfield role quite well for the East Midland side. He struggled with injuries at the season start, missing more than two months with hamstring-related injuries, but he consistently delivered as soon as he was able to get over the early challenge. Worthy to note that he contributed a goal and four assists in 26 Premier League games this season – the best season output he has recorded since he joined the league in January 2017.
Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun
You could probably be living under a rock if you claim to have not heard of Rangers’ incredible exploits in the Scottish Premiership this season. The Gers didn’t only win the league with tally of 102 points – 25 points better than arch rivals Celtic, they also did it without losing a single game (32W, 6D). Two Super Eagles stars in Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun greatly contributed to the big success the illustrious Scottish side enjoyed this season. While midfielder Aribo consistently delivered massive shifts regardless of the position he’s deployed to play (even at left-back), the contribution of center-back Balogun – who came in at the January window – to the side achieving the invincible feat should not be understated.
Paul Onuachu and Cyriel Dessers
If there’s one player who has brought huge attention to the Belgian Pro League this season, then that player is Paul Onuachu. The lanky Nigerian striker scored a huge 33 goals in 38 league games for Genk in the just concluded season as the Blue-Whites came quite close to completing an astonishing hijack of the league title over eventual champions Club Brugge. Onuachu’s compatriot Cyriel Dessers, who only joined Genk last summer, was a late bloomer this term but he nonetheless got seven goals across all competitions to his name.
Notably the duo clinched the Belgian Cup Beker van Belgie with Genk.
Asisat Oshoala
Last but not least is Oshoala who made history as the first African woman to lift the UEFA Women’s Champions League after her clubside Barcelona Femini brushed Chelsea Women aside 4-0 in the final. Notably, Oshoala scored four goals for Barcelona in the course of the competition.
