Frank Lampard who is Chelsea’s all-time top scorer and a legend of the club returned to the London club last season as a manager.
He and his team had a fair season finishing in the top 4 in the League, despite the club’s inability to sign new players at the start of the 2019/20 season due to a transfer ban that ended in January.
Despite the job he did qualifying Chelsea for this season’s champions league and playing in the FA Cup final, Frank Lampard still came under criticism from rival fans for not doing enough.
While a few have asked for him to be judged when he can bring in players of his own which they have been able to do ahead of the new season.
And with the 2020/2021 season just few a days away from its start, Lampard and his staff may not be spared, having made 6 signings to his Chelsea team, with the Likes of Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and the rest.
In fact, bookies especially Netbet Nigeria have Chelsea at 11.0 to win the Premier League title this season therefore, a below par performance from Lampard and his boys may get huge criticism.
We are familiar with cases where clubs sign players and don’t get to perform despite their multiple signings, so if Lampard and his team fail to achieve ‘a thing’ this season it will not be a new thing.
Analysing Chelsea’s signings, will Chelsea’s new signings win them trophies this season? A huge question seeking answers.
Well, signing new six players could be bitter sweet as new signings a times do not always hit the ground running and may need time to adapt or they easily fit in to the team.
Let’s profile some of their new additions
1. Timo Werner
With Timo Werner, Chelsea have got a goalscorer in their team. The German striker is not new to scoring 30 + goals in a season, and he has been on the rise in the past seasons.
And with Chelsea that creates lot of chances, he’s bound to score a lot more, as a decent finisher. So Going forward, they’ll score a lot, and will be exciting to watch.
2. Hakim Ziyech
Chelsea create lots of chances, and Hakim Ziyech signing means more and more chances would be created. Ziyech creates a lot of chances from open play and with his trademark cross field from the right wing to the far post, it’s sweetness awaiting Chelsea.
Chance creation aside, Ziyech would be a great upgrade to Willian Borges who was Chelsea’s set piece taker before his departure to Arsenal.
Ziyech is also a fine shooter from range and a threat when Chelsea face packed defences, a problem Frank Lampard and his boys found difficult to crack last season. His creative skills could help Chelsea solve a ‘park the bus team.’
3. Kai Havertz
Kai Havertz who joined from Bayer Leverkusen, scored 18 goals for the German Club last season, with an addition of of 6 -8 assists. Havertz is an all-round player who can play as a forward, an attacking midfielder, and a central attacking midfielder.
The German is a technically good player who’s deceptively fast, with good pass, can shoot with both legs and with his height, he’ll be useful defending set pieces likewise scoring them.
Moving to the defensive additions, it’s one which they had bad last season, and many people look forward to seeing how the signings made would impact on the team.
4. Thiago Silva
Thiago Silva’s signing is epic. A leader, one who will bring in solidity, experience to Chelsea’s backline.
5. Ben Chilwell
One of Chelsea’s biggest issues last season was that opponents knew that Marcos Alonso isn’t one of the fastest players, hence, he gets targeted a whole lot, by running at him on his wing knowing he’s got no pace.
With Chilwell, Chelsea seem to have gotten that covered, but still needs to work on his crossing and his end product.
Chelsea ending the season with a silverware is a possibility, but it is yet to be seen if Frank Lampard and his team can pull this off.
